Ask The Expert with Stephanie Gee

YOU ASKED. WE HAVE THE ANSWERS.

WE'RE ADDRESSING YOUR TOP SKINCARE CONCERNS, ANSWERING ALL THINGS WELLNESS, AND OF COURSE GIVING YOU TIPS FOR FLAWLESS MAKEUP APPLICATION.

Q: What should my first investment-worthy skincare product be?

A: A high quality, 15% Vitamin C serum. Vitamin C is your pillar of protection when it comes to correction and prevention for the skin. By adding a Vitamin C serum into your skincare routine, you are making the best choice to increase your skin’s vitality, health and glow. Based on your skin condition, you can add in a Vitamin C blend such as SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic or if you like minimal steps in your routine, add in Sunday Riley’s CEO Rapid Flash for a serum / moisturizer blend. Vitamin C only needs to be applied once a day and should be the first serum applied to your skin after cleansing and toning in the morning.

Q: How often should you exfoliate?

A: Based on your skin condition, it’s important to find your perfect balance of exfoliation. There are 2 types of exfoliation: chemical and physical. Chemical exfoliants can range from a leave on treatment such as retinol or as a mask. Chemical exfoliants include salicylic, lactic, glycolic and retinol. These work deep in the skin and dermis to promote cell turnover and brighter, more youthful skin. A physical exfoliation has a granular component such as a scrub with micro beads. Physical exfoliants show results more immediately like softer, smoother skin and chemical exfoliants work over time to bring new skin to the surface. Depending on the strength of your skin, you want to include both a physical and chemical exfoliant into your skincare routine anywhere from 1-4x a week.

Q: Do you need different products for morning and evening?

A: Yes. Your morning routine, depending on your skin goals, should be focused on protection, hydration and glow. Your evening routine should be focused on your long term skin goals such as nourished skin, tighter pores, brighter complexion and so on. To keep it even simpler, you only need Vitamin C and SPF in the morning and you should only use chemical exfoliants at night.

Q: Teach me about retinol

A: When it comes to exfoliants, retinol is the purest and strongest form. Depending on the blend or pure percentage of retinol, it can be incorporated into a skincare routine anywhere from 1-5x a week. If you are new to retinol, I suggest adding in Shani Darden’s Retinol Reform serum 2-3x a week at night. This retinol is a blend of retinol, lactic acid and aloe vera making it gentle, effective and result driven if used consistently. If you are seasoned with retinol or have thick skin (literally), you can experiment with a pure form of retinol like SkinCeuticals Retinol 0.5 or 1.0. With these retinols, you make experience flakey skin or peeling 2 days post application as it is forcing cell renewal and shedding dead skin simultaneously. Most importantly, if and when you start using retinol, you MUST protect your skin in the morning with Vitamin C and SPF. By using retinol, you are bringing new, beautiful skin to the surface and you need to protect your investment by wearing Vitamin C and SPF daily. If not, I compare it to driving a car without car insurance. It’s safer and more responsible to your skin to add your protection in the morning.
